CHOOSE CLEAN AIR CACHE VALLEYCache Valley experiences high levels of air pollution during the winter months because the combination of the cold temperatures and bowl-like terrain, trap the pollution in the valley and prevent it from escaping. This creates an environment with unhealthy air to breathe and smog-like driving conditions. One out of three people are at higher risk of experiencing health problems during these inversions. Health problems include respiratory and cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and asthma attacks. Air Quality is a community issue that will take a community, working together, to solve. Many factors contribute to the pollution in our air. However, one of the largest controllable factors is vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by Cache Valley residents. Studies show that when VMTs are reduced by 45% then air pollution is reduced by 20%. Choose Clean Air is a campaign designed to enhance the community’s knowledge about air quality and educate them on what they can do to help. Residents can help reduce pollution in a number of ways: car pool, use the CVTD, telecommute, bike or walk to work. If each resident parked their cars just one day during the work week, approximately 375,000 pounds of pollution would be kept out of our air. The Cache Valley Transit District and the Cache Chamber of Commerce are committed to assisting community members in meeting this goal. One aspect of this campaign is to increase ridership of public transit, the CVTD. CVTD will hold a contest during January to reward community members who ride the bus and learn about their services.
