The Cache Valley Transit District is participating in a national public awareness and education campaign patterned after the successful "Neighborhood Watch" program initiated in communities across the country. Promoting transit as a community partner and safe haven. Transit Watch encourages transit employees, passengers and neighborhood residents to be actively involved in staying alert and working together to maintain a safe transit environment.

The Transit Watch campaign encourages all CVTD employees, transit riders, and community members to be aware of their surroundings and alert to activities, packages or situations that seem suspicious. If something out of the ordinary and potentially dangerous is observed, it should be reported immediately to the proper transit or law enforcement authorities. • How you can support Transit Watch and help promote safety and security:
• Be observant, alert, and aware.
• Take the initiative and become the transit community's eyes and ears.
• Look out for one another; we can all have a safe ride if we do.
• Contact CVTD offices or the Transit Center Police if something doesn't look right.

• Be on the alert for suspicious behavior. If you spot a suspicious individual engaged in questionable activity, look for the following:
• Visible signs of nervousness
• Excessive sweating
• Sprayer bottles or aerosol canisters
• Inappropriate clothing that is excessively baggy or too heavy in warm weather.

• Be on the alert for suspicious packages. If you spot an unattended package, look for the following:
• Placement in an out-of-the-way location
• Individuals in the act of abandoning the package and hastily departing the area
• Unusual attached batteries, wires, tanks, bottles or bags that might contain chemicals
• An attached message
• A suspicious cloud, mist, gas, vapor, odor or seeping fluid
• Nearby individuals showing signs of illness or distress

• Recommended course of action:
• Do not confront suspicious individuals. Contact a transit employee or the police immediately. In the event of a suspicious package, do not use a cellular phone until you are a safe distance away.

• Be informed and have a plan of action:
• Familiarize yourself with transit facility entrances and exits.
• Follow transit authority instructions in a speedy but orderly fashion.
• Do not block bus doors from closing.
• Remain calm and listen for announcements.
• Assist fellow passengers and follow the Golden Rule: Watch out for the safety

Transit Watch was developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in partnership with the American Public Transportation Association of America (APTA), the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA), the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Stay safe while riding the bus by observing the following safety rules:
1. Board buses only at designated bus stops. Be at your bus stop a few minutes early.

2. Wait to board after the bus comes to a complete stop and the doors open.

3. Use available seating when riding the bus. If you must stand, use the handrails and overhead straps to help maintain your balance. Never stand or sit in the stairwells inside the bus.

4. Fold all carts or strollers prior to boarding the bus. Keep bus isles clear of all objects.

5. While the bus is in motion, stay behind the white line located at the front of the bus.

6. When the bus pulls up to your stop, remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop.

7. Once you are off the bus, never cross directly in front of it. Wait until the bus leaves the stop before crossing the street.

8. Obey all instructions given by the bus operator or by CVTD staff – he or she is authorized to ask you to leave Transit property for misbehavior.
